LOCAL RIDING GROUPS

SIHA's local riding groups organise both local activities and national events to provide riding, learning and social opportunities for members.  The groups, named after historic Icelandic horses Eldur, Gustur, Sletta and Vindur, each have their own identity and focus, reflecting that members want different things from their interest in Icelandic horses.  However, all aim to help people increase their enjoyment and understanding of the Icelandic horse.

Some groups hold regular training events with a trainer from Iceland, while there are also national events with members from all over Scotland. Social activities include rides, seminars, fundraising events or nights out. Details of upcoming events, plus news of recent activities can be found in the events diary.  Not owning a horse is not a barrier to being a member of SIHA, as horses are available for hire to members for some events.

The groups do not have a fixed geographical location but each tends to have its own focus of activity, depending on where its members are located:  The groups are as follows:

Eldur Eldur has no geographical centre, instead its members are to be found from Perth to Caithness, and Inverness to the Isle of Tiree. Individual members are active in a variety of activities, occasionally attending events organised by the other groups and like all SIHA members, use the Newsletter as a means of keeping in touch with the wider Icelandic horse community in Scotland
Gustur Gustur is located around the North East of Scotland with a large cluster of members around the Aberdeenshire area. The group is extremely diverse in its membership with all levels of experience and interest. Icelandic training courses are held twice a year bringing over experience trainers from Iceland.  Members get together to ride over scenic forestry tracks and blustery beaches, enjoying the social aspect as much as the riding. The group actively support and promotes the Icelandic Horse in its area.
Sletta Sletta is currently the largest group and is based in Midlothian and most of its activities are organised at Pentland Hills Icelandics. Picnic rides, twice-yearly training courses, barbeques, le trec-type competitions and the odd fancy dress ride are all to be expected during the course of the year.  There is also a growing group of junior members based at PHI
Vindur Vindur is based in East Lothian and also has members in the Scottish Borders. Members attend regular training events at Etal in Northumberland and are in the lucky position of having access to some beautiful beaches on the south east coast for their social rides.
